Those goshdarn kids. You tell them, "Don't have sex." Is that enough? No. You deny them education about contraception so they won't know how to use condoms and prevent pregnancy and STDs. Is that enough? No. Then, you make them sign a pledge, promising not to have sex. Is that enough? Apparently, it isn't.
In fact, it appears both pledgers and non-pledgers have just as much sexual activity. Certainly it's possible those who took the pledge enjoy it more, as it's more explicitly verboten, but it's hard to believe that's why the Bush administration put our tax dollars into abstinence only education. It's certainly true that withholding education about prevention results in a less informed public, and a less informed public is necessary for the GOP to win elections, but it appears the whole pledge thing is based on honor somehow, and there seems to be a dearth of it among those who take the pledge:
82% of those who took a pledge denied having taken it.
Maybe the folks who got us into the endless, pointless war in Iraq are not the best authorities on how we should educate our children. After all, they said it would take 6 days, 6 weeks, they doubted 6 months. They said they'd welcome us with flowers. They said the the smoking gun would be a mushroom cloud, the mission would be accomplished, it would be over when they caught Sadaam, when the resistance wound down, when they did a surge, when they did a little dance, and they also said it wasn't necessary to tell our kids about contraception.
Now, with the GOP thoroughly discredited, they call themselves Democrats. They're saying we need merit pay, we need to end tenure, we need to end seniority rights. and we ought not to oppose mayoral control.
As usual, they're wrong about everything. Don't hesitate to shout it from the rooftops.
